Modernization with Syrian characteristics is the impression that one experiences in Damascus. And the metaphorical road to that glorious city most definitely does not pass through the American cultural centre!

It strikes me that Elass – a Syrian by ancestry, as I understand it – lacks the desire to even attempt to understand the country of her ancestors (and perhaps even birth). I spent just one week in Syria, and while due to my profession I’m well aware of the censorship, it didn’t really bother me that much. And in fact, by running Tor, I could get to any site, albeit slowly.
It’s a shame to impose American cultural ideals on such an ancient and incredible society.
