So did many others such as Eric Hobsbawm, who stayed a CP member as long as the Party lasted. Both Philby and Hobsbawm were aware of the dreadful things done in the Stalin era and were not afraid to say so but thought Communism amounted to something much better than the hideous Stalinist parody of it. Who is to say they were wrong?

Incidentally, Philby was both shocked and appalled by the Nazi-Soviet Pact and broke off all contact with Soviet intelligence from the time of its signature until early 1941. Moscow lost touch, could not find him and actually gave up on him during that time.
