In the Pic with Balazs Gardi & Teru Kuwayama – Two Sides of the Story

Balazs Gardi and Teru Kuwayama met at the world press photo masterclass in 2000, and developed a friendship and collaborative approach to photography and journalism in the years that followed.

Following the September 11 attacks on the United States, they both embarked on long term explorations of the region that is now commonly referred to as "the central front" in the "global war on terror".  Between them, they have made more than twenty trips to the region,  traveling independently, and also as embedded reporters with US, NATO, Pakistani, and Indian military forces. 

Gardi and Kuwayama are co-directors of November Eleven, a non-profit organization dedicated to independent arts and media, crisis reporting, and humanitarian assistance. Among other efforts, November Eleven produced the Battlespace project, a traveling group exhibition of photographs from Iraq and Afghanistan, which presents an unsanitized view of the continuing conflicts. Battlespace will be featured at the Jersey Amnesty International Human Rights Festival in June 2009. November Eleven also operates www.lightstalkers.org, a global online network of photographers, journalists, and members of the military and aid communities.

Balazs Gardi is a recipient of the Prix Bayeux War Correspondents Award, the PX3 Photographer of the Year award, and numerous honors from World Press Photo, POYi, and Getty Images. He is currently working on long term, world-wide project about the global water crisis. 

Teru Kuwayama has received awards and fellowships from the Eugene Smith Fund, the Alicia Patterson Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, and the South Asian Journalists Association, among others. He is a 2009-2010 Knight Stanford fellow, focused on conflict reporting in South Asia.

Gardi and Kuwayama are both recipients of the Alexia Award for World Peace.

Tim Rogers is the new Head of Training for the Thomson Foundation. Tim has had more than thirty years of experience working across the media industry in newspapers, radio and television. A former award winning BBC presenter and investigative journalist, Tim spent 12 years as a correspondent at ITN. He ran bureaux in Moscow, Manchester and Cardiff, covering a range of stories from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the execution of Saddam Hussein, the plight of casualties of war to major UK stories including the investigation into the world’s most prolific serial killer, Dr Harold Shipman, and later the 7/7 bombings in London and the immediate aftermath.
